Privacy Policy
Introduction
UnplugMe ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our Chrome extension and related services.
1. What Data We Collect
UnplugMe is designed with privacy as a core principle. We collect minimal data:
Local Processing
The UnplugMe Chrome extension processes your social media data exports (from Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter/X, and other supported platforms) locally in your browser. This means:
- Your data is processed entirely on your device
- We do not transmit your personal content to our servers
- We do not store any of your platform data on our servers
- All processing happens client-side within your browser, on your machine
Payment Information
When you purchase a premium subscription, payment information is handled securely by Stripe. We do not collect, store, or have access to your credit card numbers, bank account information, or other sensitive payment details. Stripe processes and secures all payment data according to their own privacy standards and PCI compliance requirements.
Theme Preference
We store only one piece of data locally on your device: your preferred theme (light or dark mode). This is saved in your browser's localStorage for convenience and is never transmitted to our servers.
2. How the Chrome Extension Works
UnplugMe is a personal data portability tool that helps you archive your saved, liked, and favorited content from supported social media platforms (currently Instagram and TikTok, with Facebook and Twitter/X support in development). Here's how it works:
The Process
- You request your data export directly from the platform (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, or Twitter/X) using each platform's official "Download Your Data" feature
- The platform provides a ZIP file containing your account data
- You use the UnplugMe extension to process this ZIP file on your own device
- The extension analyzes your data and assembles your archive in your browser
- You save the archive to your device in your preferred format
Data Security
Because all processing occurs locally in your browser, your data never leaves your device. We never have access to your platform credentials, personal information, or media content. UnplugMe only processes content you already have authenticated access to on your own account, using your own session — your privacy is entirely in your hands.
3. Cookies and Local Storage
We use minimal client-side storage:
- Theme Preference: Your light/dark mode preference is stored in localStorage (theme) for persistence across sessions
- No Advertising Cookies: We do not use advertising cookies, retargeting cookies, or cross-site tracking
- No Third-Party Marketing Cookies: We do not allow third-party advertising networks to set cookies on your behalf
See Section 5 (Privacy-Respecting Analytics) below for details on the minimal, anonymized website analytics we use.
4. Payment Processing
UnplugMe uses Stripe to process payments securely. When you subscribe to premium features:
- Your payment information is encrypted and transmitted directly to Stripe
- We never store or have access to your payment credentials
- Stripe handles all billing, security, and compliance requirements
- We may store your email address and subscription status for service delivery
For more information on how Stripe handles your data, please visit stripe.com/privacy.
5. Privacy-Respecting Analytics
To understand how visitors find and use our website, we use two privacy-first analytics tools. Neither uses cross-site cookies, neither collects personally identifiable information, and neither follows you across the web.
- Plausible Analytics: Cookieless, open-source analytics for visit counts, top pages, and referrer sources. Plausible does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, is fully compliant with GDPR, CCPA, and PECR, and aggregates data without identifying individual users. See plausible.io/data-policy.
- PostHog: Product analytics for understanding which pages and features get used. Sets a first-party cookie for anonymous session tracking only — no cross-site tracking, no personal identifiers. Configured to anonymize visitors by default, mask all form input values during any session recording, honor "Do Not Track" browser signals, and not store IP addresses. See posthog.com/privacy.
You can opt out of PostHog tracking entirely by clicking Decline on our cookie banner (your choice is remembered across visits), or by enabling "Do Not Track" in your browser settings. Plausible is cookieless and collects no personal data, so no opt-out is needed for it. We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any other advertising or behavioral tracking tools.
6. Third-Party Services
UnplugMe integrates with the following third-party services, and only these:
- Stripe — payment processing (only when you make a purchase)
- Plausible Analytics — privacy-first website analytics (no cookies, no PII)
- PostHog — product analytics (anonymized, no PII, configured with privacy-respecting defaults)
- Cloudflare — website hosting and DDoS protection
We do not share, sell, or distribute your data to advertising networks or data brokers. The Chrome extension itself never communicates with any of these services — it operates entirely on your device.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Know what data we collect about you
- Request deletion of your account and associated data
- Understand how your data is used
- Opt out of any communications
To exercise these rights, please contact us at .
8. Data Retention
We retain minimal data:
- Account information (email) is retained for as long as you maintain an active subscription
- Payment records are retained as required by law and for billing purposes
- Upon account deletion, we remove all associated data within 30 days
9. Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information:
- All data transmission uses encryption (HTTPS/TLS)
- Client-side processing ensures your platform data never leaves your device
- We do not store sensitive data on our servers
10. Children's Privacy
UnplugMe is not intended for users under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If we become aware that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete such data immediately.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the updated policy on our website and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of UnplugMe after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
12. GDPR & Privacy Regulations
UnplugMe complies with applicable data protection regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and similar laws. Because we collect minimal data and process it primarily on your device, your privacy is protected by design.
