You requested your export. You opened the ZIP. Half of it doesn't work.
You followed the instructions. You went to Settings → Accounts Centre → Download your information, chose JSON, selected all time, and waited. The email arrived. You downloaded the ZIP. You unzipped it, expecting to find your saved posts — years of bookmarked recipes, travel inspiration, outfit ideas, memes you wanted to keep.
Instead, you found saved_posts.json.
You opened it. It's a list of URLs. Thousands of them. Each one points back to Instagram. And when you click one — maybe it works. Maybe it doesn't. And if you wait a few days and try again, most of them don't.
The links are dead.
What's actually inside the export
Here's the breakdown of what Instagram gives you versus what you probably expected:
| What you saved | What's in the export | What you expected | |---|---|---| | Your own posts | Real media files (photos, videos) | ✅ Real files | | Your saved posts | Links (URLs) | ❌ The actual photos/videos | | Your liked posts | Links (URLs) | ❌ The actual photos/videos | | Your collections | Links + collection names | ❌ Files organized into folders |
Your own posts come through as actual files. Everything else — the stuff you saved from other people, the things you liked — comes through as links. Not files. Links.
Why the links die
Instagram doesn't serve media from permanent URLs. When you view a post on Instagram, your browser receives a signed URL — a link with an authentication token appended to it. That token has an expiration date.
It's like a VIP pass. It gets you in the door, but only for a limited time. After that, the URL returns a 403 Forbidden or a blank response. The content is still on Instagram's servers — but the link you were given no longer has permission to access it.
How long do the links last?
It varies, but in practice:
- Instagram media URLs: expire within hours to days after the export is generated
- TikTok video URLs: similar — the CDN links expire within days
- Twitter/X media URLs: more stable, but can break if the tweet is deleted
The export ZIP sits on your computer. The links inside it have a shelf life. Every day you wait, more of them go dark.
The three things that kill your saved posts
Even if the links didn't expire, your saved posts are vulnerable to three other failure modes:
- The creator deletes the post. They remove it. The URL returns a 404. Your save is now a broken bookmark.
- The creator goes private. Their account switches to private. You can't see their content unless you follow them. The link technically exists but you can't access it.
- The account gets banned. Instagram suspends or deletes the account. Everything they posted is gone.
None of these are recoverable. Once the content leaves Instagram's servers, no tool can bring it back. This is why timing matters — you need to download the actual media files while the links are still alive and while the posts still exist.
What a real backup looks like
A real backup of your Instagram saved posts has three properties:
- The media files exist on your hard drive. Not links — actual JPEGs and MP4s.
- Your collections are preserved as folders. "Recipes" stays "Recipes," not a pile of numbered files.
- It was done while the links were still alive. Not weeks later, when half of them have expired.
The export gets you maybe 30% of the way there. It tells you what you saved and where it was. But it doesn't give you the actual content.
How to get the actual files
You need something that:
- Reads the export ZIP and extracts every saved post URL
- Visits each URL using your authenticated browser session (the one that's already logged in)
- Downloads the actual photo or video file
- Saves it to a folder structure that matches your Instagram collections
- Does all of this while the links are still valid
UnplugMe does exactly this. You drop the export ZIP in, it reads every saved post and liked post, and downloads the real media files to your hard drive — organized into folders by collection name. It runs in the background and resumes if your laptop sleeps or your connection drops.
First 50 downloads are free. No account, no credit card, no email. You can test it on your own export right now and see exactly what comes back.
Don't wait
Every day you put this off, more of your saved posts break. Some because the links expire. Some because the original creator deleted them. Some because the account went private.
The export is a snapshot. The links inside it are a ticking clock. The longer you wait, the more of your saved content turns into dead links pointing at nothing.
